about
"Lignum et Spiritus," meaning wood and breath, consists of 4 works for woodwinds and piano by Canadian composer Robert Lemay. This recording project, under the supervision of pianist Yoko Hirota, brings together young professional musicians from Toronto: Stephen Tam (flute), Anthony Thompson (clarinet), Ron Cohen Mann (oboe), Kevin Harris (bassoon).
Robert Lemay has tried, in this series, to find a fusion between piano and woodwinds rather than a juxtaposition. In these pieces, one can speak of true woodwind and piano duets instead of works for woodwind with piano accompaniment. The two instruments become complementary to each other.
Today, compositions for woodwinds and piano are often associated with the classical repertoire that students play during their studies. It is in this spirit that Robert Lemay has composed these 4 pieces. Without being pedagogical works, the composer intended them, first, to be played by students of the 2nd university cycle or 3rd year at the conservatory, but also to be performed during a regular concert.
