Canadian Suite Celebrations (pun intended) pays tribute to the musical creations of three outstanding Canadian composers; to a world-class concert hall in Edmonton, Alberta, with a magnificent Canadian-built pipe organ; to a community of musicians and music lovers at the Royal Canadian College of Organists; and to our own – Duo Majoya’s – lifelong passion and adventures making music together.

We stumbled on the unlikely marriage of piano and organ and fell hopelessly in love with the musical possibilities: the kaleidoscope of orchestral colours that flowed from the combination of instruments, such as the piano as percussion and the organ’s sustaining sounds – as well as the reverse! Excited by the possibilities, we began commissioning and arranging works for organ and piano. The idea was initially met with scepticism from composers, pianists, and organists alike, but we now take delight in its acceptance and the increasing number of organ/piano teams around the world, many of whom perform works originally composed for us.

With this CD, we gratefully honour and celebrate the visionaries past and present who created and continue to oversee the Winspear Centre for Music, and its Davis Concert Organ built by Orgues Létourneau. As a member of the organ selection committee, Marnie was connected to the “mighty Davis” from its humble beginnings as a “hope and a prayer” through its completion. All thanks to the generous philanthropy of the late Professor Emeritus Dr. Stuart Davis (University of Alberta,
Chemistry), funding support continues for the use and maintenance of the organ through the Davis Trust.

Canadian Suite Celebrations rend hommage au talent créatif de trois compositeurs canadiens exceptionnels, et fait l’éloge d’une magnifique
salle de concert à Edmonton (Alberta) dotée d'un majestueux orgue à tuyaux de fabrication canadienne. L’album est aussi un hommage à la
communauté de musiciens et de mélomanes du Collège royal canadien des organistes, et enfin, célèbre notre propre passion—Duo Majoya—et les nombreuses aventures qui ont parsemé nos collaborations musicales au fil des ans.

Le mariage du piano et de l'orgue semble certes improbable, mais il offre d’immenses possibilités musicales, et l’idée a eu sur nous l’effet d’un coup de foudre. La combinaison des deux instruments peut engendre tant de couleurs orchestrales—comme par exemple, l’effet percussif du piano s’alliant aux sons soutenus de l'orgue—ou l'inverse. C’est un véritable kaléidoscope musical ! Enthousiasmés par toute cette potentialité, nous avons entrepris de commander et d’arranger des oeuvres pour orgue et piano. Compositeurs, pianistes et organistes ont d’abord accueilli l’idée avec scepticisme, mais le concept a gagné en popularité. C’est avec bonheur que nous constatons aujourd’hui l’adhésion du milieu musical, et le nombre croissant de tandems orgue et piano qui interprètent ce répertoire (dont plusieurs oeuvres qui furent à l'origine composées pour nous) à travers le monde.

Cet album nous permet de rendre hommage et de célébrer les visionnaires d'hier et d'aujourd'hui qui ont créé, et continuent de gérer, le Winspear Centre for Music avec son orgue de concert Davis, construit par Orgues Létourneau. À titre de membre du comité de sélection de l'orgue, Marnie a été associée au « puissant Davis » depuis les tout premiers moments. Le magnifique instrument, qui n’était à l’origine qu’un « espoir, un souhait » devint réalité et fut enfin installé. Grâce à la générosité du regretté philanthrope et professeur émérite Stuart Davis (Université de l'Alberta, chimie), l'utilisation et l'entretien de l'orgue continuent d'être financés par le Davis Trust.
